The sunflower had seeded itself between two flagstones in the inner ward of Hollin Keep, the only thing for three miles that still turned to face the sun. You had watched it from the steward's room all August, where the glass left the window years ago and the wind comes in smelling of wet sheep and old mortar. The bailiff called it a weed. You called it nothing at all, because naming it felt like letting the surveyors in.

They came in September with their chains and their little flags, measuring the walls for a buyer in Harrogate who wanted the stone for a garden folly. The head of the flower had grown heavy by then, its petals gone from bright gold to a weathered yellow, green where they met the middle. The centre was a grey-brown field of dots, thick as soot on a sill, and when the wind pulled at it the whole disc shivered like a sieve.

On the last afternoon, the lead surveyor stepped on the root without looking, and the stalk snapped at the base. You did not shout. You knelt on the warm flags, lifted the head, and rubbed the seeds loose into your palm, then walked them along every crack in the ward, pressing each one into the mortar with your thumb. The chain lay where he had dropped it, already gathering yellow dust from the petals.

When the buyer's letter arrived in April, the ward had gone green from wall to gatehouse, and a dozen small suns stood among the flags. The letter asked, very politely, whether the garden was to be cleared before the survey resumed.
