Three sunflowers across the wrist
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
Three sunflowers sit side by side in a band across the inside of a wrist, with the largest flower in the centre and two smaller ones at either side. Each flower has bold black outlines, yellow petals with orange and red shading, and dark brown centres with subtle shading. The photo is taken straight on, showing the full width of the design against plain pale skin.

Dear Maureen,

The sunflowers came up along the fence the way Mum always said they would, three of them in a row before anyone had sown a thing on purpose. You'll laugh, but I went out at six with the watering can and found the middle one already taller than the shed gutter.
I've kept the bed the way she kept it, which mostly means letting the bindweed have the corners. The two shorter ones either side are slower, bent a little towards the big one as if they're waiting for it to say something. Mr Abbott next door says sunflowers follow the sun across the day and turn back overnight, which I didn't believe until I stood there at dusk and watched the nearest head lean round like a man checking his watch.
The goldfinches have had the first seeds already. I shooed them off with a broom and then felt daft, because Mum would have given them the whole row and a bucket of peanuts besides. I've saved some heads for you in a paper bag on the windowsill, dried and dark as coffee grounds, so you can plant them come April.
Come down in August if you can. The big one should be open by then, and I want you to see it from the back step, the three of them lined up against the fence like they're sitting for a photograph. Bring the good kettle.
Your loving brother, Dennis
