Sunflower tattoo on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower covers the shoulder and upper arm, with yellow petals outlined in bold black linework and a grey-shaded centre. A red rose is partly visible at the lower edge of the design, and a white neckline top and part of the face are visible in the frame. The flat colour fills and soft natural lighting give the piece a clean, graphic look.

The rain has been at the market since six, Ruth, and the sunflowers have had enough of it. I stood them in the back of the van with the doors open so their heads could see something other than tarpaulin. You'd laugh at me fussing over a bucket of flowers the size of dinner plates, but you were always the one who said they follow the sun across the sky the way dogs follow a whistle.

Nobody bought much. Mr Gollop from the fishmonger's stopped by with his hood up and said the square was a lake and the gulls had given up on the bins. I sold three bunches to a woman in a green mac who wanted them for her mother's funeral and didn't want to talk about it, which suited me fine. Then the cloud split open over the church tower, just for a minute, and every head on my stall swung round to face it, petals gone gold and wet, as if someone had called them in for their tea.
I thought about you then, and about your last letter from Bristol, the one that said the city had a hundred shops selling nothing but coffee. I'm not writing to tell you to come home. I kept the seed heads from the last batch, dried brown and heavy as bread, and I've folded a paper twist of them into this envelope. Plant them in the yard against the back wall, where the afternoon sun lands. Give them a summer and they'll turn for you too.
The rain's back now, drumming on the van roof. Mind yourself on those buses.
Love, Mam
