Sunflower tattoo on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A sunflower with shaded petals and a dark, detailed centre fills the upper part of the arm, with two leaves and a few small seed-like marks trailing down the skin below it. The work uses soft grey shading and fine darker accents to build depth across the petals and leaves. The photo is taken against a pale wall with a dark sleeve at the top edge of the frame.

The lift at St Aidan's always stopped on the third floor whether you pressed for it or not, and my grandmother used to say that was the building remembering who it belonged to. I was nineteen and on nights as a porter, pushing trolleys of linen down corridors that smelled of bleach and burnt toast. Mrs Okonedo on Ward Six had a sunflower painted on her bedside cabinet, a cheap print cut from a calendar, and every night she asked me to turn it to face the window so the sun would find it come morning.

She was not going to see another summer, and she knew it better than the doctors did. One night she made me sit with her while the ward went quiet, and she told me that sunflowers do not follow the sun the way people think. They turn in the young hours, facing east, and when the seeds are heavy they bow their heads down toward the ground, as if listening for something under the soil. She said she had spent forty years listening for her own husband's van in the drive and had never once heard it coming.

I forgot most of what she said that night. I didn't forget the last thing. At four o'clock she asked me to take the print off the cabinet and put it in her hands, and she traced the dark centre with one finger, slow, counting the seeds the way you count a rosary. When the day staff came on I was already at the lift, and the doors opened on the third floor, and nobody pressed anything at all.
