Three sunflowers on the lower abdomen

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Three sunflowers overlap in a cluster, with the largest in the centre and two smaller blooms at the upper left and lower right. The petals are drawn with dark outlines and fine hatched lines, and the seed heads are shaded with stippled dots. The design is in black and grey ink and sits on the side of a bare midriff above a grey waistband.

The seed came in on a sack of bait that split against the fish market wall in July, and nobody bothered to sweep it up. By August three sunflowers stood in the crack between the ice house and the slipway, taller than my father and twice as stubborn. Gran said they were the only things on Hallow Quay that never looked over their shoulder at the weather.

They followed the sun from dawn to dusk, so by evening their faces were turned towards the harbour mouth, where the boats would come home. Every skipper on the quay knew it. When the fleet went out at four, my father lifted a hand to them from the wheelhouse of the Mary Jane as she cleared the wall, and he never once admitted he was waving at a weed.

One October the fleet came back short. The Mary Jane was the last to round the wall, and by then the lamps were lit and the gulls had gone quiet. I walked down with a flask and found the three heads hanging heavy with seed, bent low, their faces still pointed at the sea although there was no sun left to follow. I stood between them until the cold got into my boots. Then I broke off the largest head, carried it home under my arm, and put it on the kitchen table, where it faced the door and waited for him to walk through it.
