Sunflowers, daisies and rose on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large sleeve-style tattoo of two sunflowers, pink and white daisies and a red rose, with two red birds in flight near the top. The sunflower petals and centres are shaded in fine gradients, and the leaves and stems are rendered in layered greens. The flowers fill the frame as a dense, rounded composition wrapping around the arm.

Marjorie had been out on the harbour wall since five, pinching the dead heads off the sunflowers that leaned over the chandlery's back gate. The gulls were already quarrelling over the fish boxes on the quay.

The red birds came every morning now, two of them, flashing off the brick of the old net loft as if they had been sent to check on her. Her husband Dennis had called them cardinals, though they were nothing like the ones on his mother's Ohio postcards. He had planted the rose by the door the spring their daughter was born, and it had taken twenty years to climb past the sill. Last week it finally flowered, a crimson so heavy the petals sagged like wet paper.

She cut three daisies from the bed by the step, pale pink ones Dennis always said looked as if they had been out in the rain, and walked them down to the harbourmaster's hut. Tom Reece was on the phone to the lifeboat station and waved her in without looking up. She put the flowers in an empty jam jar on his desk, and he glanced at them, then at her.

"Sunflowers are for the lighthouse," she said. "Two of them, facing east, so the keepers know it's morning." He opened his mouth to argue and shut it again. Outside, the first boats were chugging past the wall, and somewhere above the gulls two red shapes turned together and came back toward the town.
