Sunflowers and vines on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo of sunflowers covers the upper arm and shoulder, with several yellow blooms with dark brown centres and a few unopened buds. Green leaves and curling stems run diagonally across the skin, with dark outlines defining the petals and foliage. Yellow, green and brown ink dominate, and the design is shown against a red brick wall with a blue patterned top at the edge of the frame.

The sunflowers had gone over by the second week of September, every head bowed as though it was reading the path. Irene Pask stood at the allotment gate with a carrier bag of bean canes and watched Dev Moran drag bindweed off the fence wire with his bare hands.

"You can't leave them standing," he said, not looking up. "The council will have the lot."

She had planted them the spring her husband went into Harrogate General, from a paper packet bought at the hardware shop on Cross Street, and every July since they had come up taller than the shed roof. Their leaves were broad as dinner plates, and the runners climbed the wire without any help from her, looping over the water butt and down into the bean row as if they had somewhere to be. Mostly she let them. Some years she counted forty blooms before the first frost.

Dev had been coming to the plot since the spring, when his nan's knees gave out and she handed him the key. He was eleven and seemed to think nobody over fifty could be trusted with a spade. Yesterday he had asked why the biggest head on the fence was still holding its seeds when the goldfinches had picked the others clean, and she had said nothing, only pulled a shoebox from under the potting bench.

She tipped the dark crown of the largest sunflower into his palm, and the seeds ran loose like sand, striped grey and black. "Against the south wall, where the brick keeps the heat in," she said. "Sow them in May. Don't fuss. They'll find the light on their own." He closed his fingers around them as if they might escape, and for once he didn't argue.
