Sunflowers inside a triangle outline
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Three sunflower heads with layered petals fill a bold black triangle outline on the skin. The flowers use soft grey shading and fine detail on the petals and centres, with the darkest tones in the seed heads. The triangle sits centrally on the frame against plain, lightly marked skin.

The last of Halloran's Travelling Show pitched on the common outside Wrexham in the week the sunflowers came up along the ditch. Nobody had sown them. Tomas, who held the ring-pole and had not spoken to the ringmaster since Whitsun, said the seed had come in with the birdseed sacks, and that a sunflower never asks where it has been planted.

There were three acts left by then: Mabel the mule, who could count to seven if you held a carrot where she could see it; Denholm the strongman, who ate a little less every season; and a knife-thrower called Pell whose hands had begun to shake on the cold mornings. The takings were a few coppers in a biscuit tin. Ada, who sewed the costumes and had never once been paid for it, found the red pennant torn clean across by the wind. She cut what was left into a triangle, and because the cloth was the colour of a dying fire, she worked three flowers into it with charcoal thread, one in each corner and one in the middle, their heads heavy as lanterns.
The villagers came out that Saturday to see the flowers. They stood at the gate with their hands in their pockets and said the heads turned all day, following the lamp on the ring, the sun over the hedge, the ringmaster's hat. Tomas said that was nonsense. Ada said nothing, but she had watched them too.
On the Monday they struck the tent. The caravans rolled out one by one down the lane towards Chester. Ada pinned the triangle to the last cart's tailboard, and when she looked back from the bend, the three heads were all turned the other way, towards the empty common, as if they had decided which way the show would not be going.
