Sunglasses with a city skyline reflection
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A pair of black-framed sunglasses sits across the forearm, with both lenses filled by a dark city skyline silhouetted against a gradient of blue, orange and red. The frames have bold black outlines and solid fill with subtle highlights, while the lenses are softly shaded to suggest a sunset sky. The design is centred and fills most of the frame, with a faint pale line drawing visible at the upper left.

The lens grinder at the back of Halloran's had been coughing since Tuesday, so Dev spent the morning at the counter with a jeweller's screwdriver and a tray of loose screws. Nobody came in before eleven except a man with a carrier bag of bent wire spectacles, all bent the same way, as if one large and patient dog had sat on them over many years.

The sunglasses arrived just after lunch. Black acetate, the sort every uncle owned in 1987. They had been left on the number 14 bus, and the person who handed them across the counter said she'd found them on the seat and didn't want them, and didn't want them back either. Dev held them up to the window. In the left lens the city stood as a row of black teeth against a sky that went from pale blue to orange to a red that looked like a warning. In the right lens the same skyline sat a little further off, as though someone had stepped back to get a better view.
He polished the scratches out of one hinge, wrote a card that said Found, bus 14, Thursday, and tucked it into the frame. He meant to put them in the window display with a price on them, but the afternoon went the way afternoons go, and by five the glasses were still sitting on the ledge by the till where the light from the car park came through them.
When he finally picked them up to lock the drawer, he noticed that the lenses had caught something new. Across the reflected towers, very small and very orange, was the sign above the shop door, Halloran's in tired capitals, hanging over the traffic as if the whole city had been waiting for someone to look at it from the outside.
