Small daisy on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small daisy sits on the inner wrist, drawn with a single thin black outline around white petals. The centre is filled with yellow, and the petals are left as unshaded skin. The flower is centred on a plain, softly lit forearm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dennis Hale pedalled the lane out of Marsh Cross with the telegram buttoned inside his jacket, the bell silent because his mother had told him never to ring it at a house where the blinds were down. Ox-eye daisies crowded both verges and climbed the hedges in drifts, and he counted the field gates as he passed them, the way she counted rosary beads.

Mrs Ada Pellow was on her back step with a colander of peas in her lap, sleeves rolled above the wrist. She did not get up when he came through the gate. "You've got the face on," she said. "Sit down before you fall over, Dennis, and give me the thing."

He gave it to her. She turned the envelope over twice without opening it, and he saw her thumb press the flap as if testing whether it was warm. Then she tore it open and read it, her lips moving on each word. The line was short. Her boy Frank was off the Harwich boat on Thursday and would walk up from the station if nobody came for him.

She did not cry. She reached over the border, pulled a daisy from the clump by the step, and started on its petals one at a time, saying "he comes, he doesn't" under her breath. The last petal fell on the path. She looked at the bare yellow middle for a long moment, then dropped the stalk into the colander among the peas, where it sat bright and plain for anyone to find.
