Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined shield, similar to the Superman logo, sits on the inner wrist. The thin, even black linework has an open interior with stylised lettering inside the shield. The photograph is black and white, with the forearm running across the frame against a soft, pale background.

They were lettering the new fascia for Hollis & Daughters, a shield hung above the door, outlined in black, with the name stacked inside it in three lines. Pell had drawn the outer shape himself with a compass and a steady hand. "A shield tells people you're keeping something safe," he said. "So whatever's inside it has to be worth keeping." Nell spent the whole afternoon on one O, a fat, obedient circle that kept trying to become an oval.
By dusk the wind had come up off the Humber and the top line had skinned over. Pell climbed down, looked up at the shield for a long while, then took the brush from her and added one stroke beneath the final letter, a hook no bigger than a fingernail.
"Nobody will see that from the road," Nell said.
"The people who walk past every morning will," he said, wiping his hands on his coat. "That's who it's for."
