Swallow and Freedom on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black swallow in flight sits above the word Freedom in a dark serif script, both tattooed on a forearm near the wrist. The swallow is drawn with solid silhouette shading and a long, curling tail that loops into the lettering. The image is black and grey, with stacked silver bangles wrapped around the wrist in the foreground.

You are fourteen the spring the swallows come back to the silversmith's eaves in Alexandria, and Master Diomedes says a bird that returns to the same beam is worth three clerks. Your job is to sweep the ash from the forge floor, fetch the fine wire from the cedar chest, and keep your mouth shut while the hammers ring.

Every bangle you bend has to be drawn through the ridged plate and pressed by hand until the twist runs smooth as river stone. Diomedes sells them to women on the Canopic Way who count their husbands' wealth by the jingle at their wrists. He never asks what the birds think of the noise, and you learn to hum over the hammering so the pair nesting above the bellows will not flinch.
In autumn the nest empties all at once. You find one swallow left, its wing caught in a loop of wire you dropped on the sill. You work the shears gently, one twist at a time, and when it is free it does not fly at once. It lifts, turns in a tight circle over the anvil, then slants through the open gate with its forked tail drawn out like the stroke of a scribe's pen, and it is gone over the harbour walls toward the south.
Diomedes finds you that evening bent over an unfinished band. You do not look up. You shape the last curve, leave the open ring on the sill where the nest was, and walk out past the gate with your own wrists bare. Behind you the wire lies where you left it, the loop still curling toward nothing.
