The mail boat from Skerrow only ran when the wind allowed, so the sisters of Hollin Dale tied their promises before anyone went down to the slip. Mairead was eleven and thought the ribbon too thin to matter. Her sister Ada, fourteen and already certain about boats, looped a length of black silk around her own left wrist, then took Mairead's right hand without asking and tied the other end there.

Their father was crossing to the mainland for a new engine part for the fish hut and would be back on Thursday, or Friday if the Minch was in a mood. "You tie it, you leave it," Ada said. "Gran says the sea reads knots." Mairead said the sea could not read anything, which was exactly why it drowned people. Ada laughed so hard she had to sit down on the bollard.

Thursday came and went. The ribbons frayed and softened, so each sister tied a second bow over the first, and then a third, until the knots sat neat and small as pearls. On Friday the boat came round the point low in the water, and their father stepped off with a box under one arm and a face full of weather. He saw the two bows before he saw them, and he stopped.

Ada untied hers first, because she was the eldest and it was her job. Mairead kept hers on until it had gone grey with salt, which took most of a winter.
