Swallow in flight on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A swallow with spread wings and a forked tail is shown in mid-flight, angled diagonally across the forearm. The feathers and body are rendered with fine, layered linework and soft grey shading that gives the bird volume and a realistic appearance. The background is a red top and a brick wall, and the tattoo is the clear focal point of the composition.

The swallows came back to the cart shed at Hollin Farm the same week the lambing ended, and my father stood in the yard with his cap in his hand and counted them in like a man reading a register. Four years he'd been gone on the herring boats out of Lowestoft, and every spring he said the birds knew the way home better than any telegram did.

I was nine that May and thought it daft. I told him swallows only wanted mud and a dry roof. He laughed, took the pencil stub from behind his ear, and drew a bird on the back of the feed merchant's invoice: long wings swept back, a tail split like a pair of scissors. 'Every one of them has flown from Africa,' he said. 'Thousands of miles, and they still find this shed.'
The telegram came on the Tuesday. It was not from the sea this time but from the harbour office, to say the Mary Ellen had gone down off the Dogger Bank in a blow and there would be no more letters. Mam read it twice at the kitchen table, folded it into her apron pocket, and went out to the shed without a word. I followed and found her on the upturned bucket, watching the swallows dart in and out through the gap under the beam to feed their young.
She didn't cry. She only said, 'Well, they got back,' and when I asked who, she nodded up at the nest. I still have that invoice. The bird on it is wrong in every feather, but I know which way it is flying.
