Swallow tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a person's lower leg and hand, with grey turned-up trousers and black brogues. A small swallow in flight is tattooed on the ankle in black linework with grey shading, and a darker design is partly visible on the forearm. The muted grey background and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoos.

The swallow came in low over the Sound of Hale the afternoon the Mary Ann lost her jib, skimming the grey chop as if it had a grudge against the water. Old Tam Renwick swore it was the same bird that had nested under the lighthouse gallery every spring since his father's time, and that a swallow never flew this far out unless it was bringing word home.

Nobody on Hale believed him, but nobody argued either. Ailsa Burn, who ran the post office and the only tea room, had pinned a photograph of the Mary Ann above her counter with a note asking for news. The boat had sailed for the mainland with four men aboard and a cargo of slate. Three weeks had passed, and only a crate of slate had come back, bobbing off Skerry Point.

Tam took his skiff out at first light with a flask in his coat and a stubborn heart. The swallow kept pace with him, dipping ahead, circling back, always settling on the same rusted buoy at the edge of the reef. Wedged between two black rocks beneath it he found the jib, torn but whole, and a brass oarlock engraved with a name he knew.

When he brought it ashore, Ailsa read the name aloud and folded the paper back over the photograph. "They'll be on the far side of the reef," she said. "The bird knew the way." Tam shrugged, but he went back out that evening with a lantern, and the swallow was waiting on the buoy, tail flicking, as if it had been keeping time for him all along.
