Tattooed hands tying a light blue lace
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands with colourful tattoos tie light blue laces on a dark shoe, with a grey suit sleeve and white cuffs above. The right hand carries a bold animal face on its back, with coloured shading and dark outlines, and block letters across the knuckles. The left hand shows a red and yellow ornamental design with a dark outline, and a small dark tattoo sits on the wrist, with another visible on the shin.

Tuesday, and the rain hasn't let up since Friday. Mr Hollis came in at half four with his good brogues split along the welt, the pair he wears to the chapel on Church Row, and asked me to make them look as if they had never walked anywhere. I told him a shoe keeps a record of every street it has been down, and he laughed and said that was exactly why he wanted them mended, not remembered.

I have had a card of pale blue laces in the drawer under the last-block since August. Nobody buys that colour for black oxfords except the lad from the bakery, who ties them his grandad's way, a double loop and a tuck, so they never come undone on the bus. Last week he left the tin of boot polish on the bench with the lid still off, the old one with the painted fox his mother gave him for luck. I told him foxes don't bring luck to cobblers. He said he'd never met a cobbler who was a fox, and that made me laugh more than I had in a month.
Mr Hollis came back this afternoon in a grey suit with the cuffs turned back, which I have never seen him do. He didn't want the brogues. He set a box on the bench and asked me to lace a plain black pair with the blue, the ones he'd bought for his brother's service. His fingers weren't steady, so I did it for him, a double loop and a tuck, and I did not ask whose feet they were for.
He stood looking at the knot for a long time, then pressed a shilling into the leather apron on my chest. "Keep the rest of the card," he said. "Tie somebody else's shoes with them. Somebody who's going further than the chapel."
