Swallow tattoo on an open hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A single black swallow in flight is drawn on the inner wrist and base of the palm, with its wings swept out and a forked tail. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, with the ink sitting in clean, dark strokes against the skin. The background is pale and blurred, so the hand and tattoo are the clear focus of the composition.

Cook Halloran had flour to his elbows when the swallow came in through the galley porthole, skimming the heat above the range before it found the gap beside the coal bunker and settled on the rim of the salt beef cask. No land bird had any business two hundred miles out from Cork, yet there it sat, black-backed and quick, while the boys crowded the hatch to stare.

"Bad luck to kill one," said Teague, the youngest, who had been sick over the rail every morning since Bristol.

"Nobody's killing anything," Halloran said. He tore the end from the loaf cooling on the rack and crumbled it on the sill. The bird took the crumbs in short pecks, its wings half open as though it might leave at any moment and never quite decided. His mother had kept swallows under the eaves at Carrigmore, and she always said a bird that came aboard on its own was carrying someone's message home.

That night the wind dropped and the sea went flat as slate. Halloran sat up by the banked fire and watched the bird roost on the lamp hook, its forked tail lifting with each slow roll of the hull. Teague came down at four bells for his biscuit and found the cook asleep on the flour sacks with his cap pulled low.

By morning the swallow was gone, but a single feather lay on the bread board, long and dark and forked at the tip. Halloran turned it over twice, then pinned it into his cap band. "Mister Doyle," he called up the companionway, "the land is off the larboard bow. You'll want to bear north-east." The mate laughed at him, then looked, and the grey smudge of coast was there exactly where the feather pointed.
