Hummingbird tattoo on the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small hummingbird in flight is tattooed on the back of a person's neck, with the head turned away from the camera. The bird is rendered as a simple solid black silhouette with minimal detail, and the wings are angled upward. The shallow depth of field blurs the bokeh lights and dark hair behind it, keeping the focus on the tattoo.

The thread was meant to reach Maro's house before the bread was cut, and it did not. Tomas had tied one end to his bride's wrist at the church door and walked the other up the hill road to his mother's, the way his grandfather had done, so the two houses would be joined before anyone sang. But the wind came down off the snow that morning and took the thread from his fingers at the bend by the chapel.

Everyone in Vrana knew what a lost thread meant. Old Kalina said only a bird could carry it, since men were too heavy for the high path. So the families stood in the square and waited, and the bride sat on the low wall with her veil pinned back, and nobody liked to eat.

A hummingbird came over the wall, though no hummingbird had ever been seen in those mountains. It hung in the air above the bride's shoulder, its wings a blur, then turned and flew east up the valley, slow enough for the children to keep pace. The thread went with it. Where it snagged on the iron cross of the chapel roof, the bird waited, a dark mark against the grey sky, until Tomas's cousin climbed up and freed it.

The thread was never cut after that, and the bride, when she was old, would point up the hill whenever a young couple came to ask her about marriage. She would say the bird had been the only thing light enough for the job. Then she would ask for more bread, and someone would have to fetch it, because she did not like to be left facing the empty road.
