Fine line flowing tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small black tattoo on the wrist, made of thin, continuous lines that loop and sweep across the skin. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is a dark grey-black. The shallow depth of field blurs the background, keeping the tattoo in focus, and a braided string bracelet sits at the bottom edge of the frame.

Nobody in Harrow Cross remembered who first laid the single line of rail. The old stationmaster said it had been one length of iron from the coast to the hills, with no points and no sidings, so that a train could never be shunted into a dead end. Everyone who rode it arrived somewhere they had not planned to go.

Ada Penhallow kept the ticket hatch for forty years and never once sold a return. People came to her with their fares in damp fists and asked where the line would take them. She would look at the blue ink of the timetable and tell them the truth, which was that it ran only one way, forward, and bent as the land bent.

One March a boy came in with no money and a dog wrapped in his coat. He wanted to reach the sea, and the sea was not printed on any board. Ada slid him a ticket anyway, stamped with the date and no destination. He thanked her and walked out onto the platform, where the rails ran off in long loops towards the grey.

The train came out of the cutting whistling low. When it had gone round the far bend, Ada could see its smoke drawing one unbroken line across the hills, rising, dipping, rising again, until it thinned to nothing above the water. The boy never wrote. But every spring a letter arrived at the hatch addressed to her, with a sketch of the same looping track folded inside and a single word underneath: arrived.
