The rain had been coming off the slate roofs of Thornmarket since before dawn, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would clear. Mabel Crane kept her eel stall under the eaves of the corn hall, where two swallows had built a mud cup above the hook rail the spring before. They came back every year, she said, the way debts came back.

The year the cart-man Tobias Hale came with his brass scales and no money, he stood in the wet and offered her his hand. She did not take it. Her father had been cheated by a handshake, she said, and a handshake was only a promise that could be walked away from. He shrugged, pulled his cap low, and went to sell his pewter at the far end, where the rain ran off the gutter in a sheet.

Through the autumn the swallows went south and did not return to the hall roof. Mabel sold eels to the same customers and counted coins she did not need to count. Then in March, on the first warm morning, the birds came back, two of them, circling the empty hook and calling down at her as if she were the one who had been late.

Tobias came that same week with a sack of barley he had carried all the way from the coast. He held out his hand again, palm up, rain still beading on the knuckles. This time she took it. The swallows dropped low over the stall, cutting the wet air, and Mabel laughed for the first time since the winter and said the rain could fall for all she cared.
