Swallows, key and heart on a baby bodysuit
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A white baby bodysuit hangs from a line by its shoulders, printed with a design of two blue swallows facing each other. Between them a gold key crosses over a red heart, with pale blue ribbons trailing down from the key and beside the birds. The bold outlines and flat, saturated colours are typical of traditional tattoo flash, and the design is centred on the front of the garment against a plain grey background.

The swallows came first, always, and that was how you knew the crossing was nearly done. My father used to say it on the deck of the Marigold, a coaster out of Harwich that never once made the timetable, when the little birds would flock down from the Dutch coast and dart about the rigging like they'd been sent ahead to check the weather.

By the time we reached the mouth of the Orwell that autumn, there were two of them sitting on the jib boom, close as a married couple at a christening. Nobody aboard would touch them. Old Teddy Vane said swallows that rest on a boat are carrying somebody's luck, and you didn't want to be the fool who frightened it off. So we sat with our tea and let them stay, and the key came out of my mother's drawer in Ipswich the week after, where it had lain for twenty years since the house on Quay Street was sold.
She never said what the key opened. She only pressed it into my hand in the station yard, warm from her coat pocket, and said the ribbon was for tying it to whatever I'd be carrying home. I still have it. The red heart on the tin box has rubbed nearly to brass. Whenever a crossing gets rough and the swallows come down to the rigging, I think of her hand closing over mine, and I hold on to the key a while longer than I need to.
