Fine line constellation with crescent moon on side

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a small crescent moon and a scatter of tiny star points connected by fine dotted lines, forming a constellation. The linework is delicate and uses solid black ink with no shading. The design sits alone on pale skin against a soft, neutral background, with a patterned top and grey waistband framing the area.

The skipper's chart table smells of diesel and wet wool, and he hands you the pencil without looking up. "Stars first," he says. "The sea will lie to you by day, but it never lies about the sky." Outside the wheelhouse window the Shetland light is going grey, and the first pinprick above the bow is already there, hard and small.

You draw what he tells you. The crescent moon goes at the western edge, thin as a paring from a lemon, because the moon, he says, is the only one up there that keeps changing its mind. Then the stars, joined with dots of pencil so the lines won't fool you into thinking they're solid. "Solid is a lie," he says. "Dotted is honest. You only ever see part of it."

Three nights later the engine coughs and dies somewhere off the Faroe bank, and the wheelhouse goes black apart from the instruments. You take the sextant out of its box with hands that won't stop shaking and find the star he showed you, then the moon beside it, then the line of dots you drew in the margin of the log. The fixed point comes up exactly where the pencil said it would.

Afterwards, when the tow is made fast and the boat limps home, he pins your chart to the wheelhouse wall beside his own, both of them creased and salt-stained. "Dotted," he says, tapping the glass. "Keep drawing it like that."
