Sweet Pea script on lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the words Sweet Pea written in flowing cursive script across the lower back. The linework is fine and even, in black ink, with the capital S and P looped and the words spaced widely apart. The skin is warm toned and the image is cropped tightly, with the top of the jeans waistband and belt loop visible below the tattoo.

Dear Dad, The snow has shut the lane since Tuesday, so I am writing this at the back table by the fire with the ledger the landlady lent me. The seed packets you gave me are in my coat pocket, still dry, though the paper has gone soft at the corners from my handling.

Mrs Ashby, who keeps the Crown, has a wall of old seed catalogues behind the bar. Last night she pulled out one from 1911 with a painting of sweet peas in a tin jug and read me the names: Countess Spencer, Navy Blue, Painted Lady. She said the flowers were called sweet peas because the first ones came from Sicily and smelled of honey, and that the nurserymen who named them had no shame about nicknames.

I told her about the canes you pushed into the south wall every March, and how you would not let anyone pick the first bloom until the Sunday. She laughed and said you sound like a man who keeps the best things for himself. I did not argue. The wind has got under the door again and the candle is guttering, so I will finish this in the morning when the plough comes through.

In the morning the lane was white to the hedgerow and the plough was a dot at the bottom of the hill. Mrs Ashby had left a jam jar of sprigs on the windowsill, pale mauve and deep purple, cut from pots she has been forcing in the back kitchen since October. I have tucked one between these pages. Plant the packet in the warm bed when the frost goes. Tell Mum I am coming home for the first flower.
