Tribal lion face line design

Black and grey · Flash

A front-facing lion head drawn in bold black linework on a plain white background. The mane is shown as sweeping tapered strokes that narrow to points, and the eyes, nose and muzzle are defined by thinner lines. The design is solid black and white, centred in the frame with no shading or added colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The show lost its big top to a November gale, and by the second winter it owned two painted caravans, a pony with a bad hip, and Orrin the lion. The villagers still paid a penny at the gate to watch him walk the field on a chain, his mane combed out in long black points that the wind caught and bent back over his ears. Nobody asked how old he was. The ringmaster, Dacre Holloway, had stopped counting birthdays after the fire at Wexcombe.

Nell Parrish came to the show in the thaw with a tinker's cart and a cracked kettle to mend. She saw the lion lying on straw in the far wagon, his head low, and she saw that his mane had gone dull and thick like wet rope. That night she sat by his cage with a horn comb and worked the knots out one by one, the way her gran had done for the horses. Orrin did not roar. He watched her with his pale, steady eyes and let her finish.

In the morning the points of his mane were sharp again, each one tapering to a fine edge. Holloway came out in his shirtsleeves, swore at the frost, and then stopped and stared. The lion lifted his head and the mane lifted with it, catching the early light like something drawn in ink. Nell packed her kettle and went on her way, and the show walked the road east that day with the lion at the front, his mane streaming behind him as though he had somewhere to be.
