Symmetrical scrollwork with heart pentagram
Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical black ink design of ornate filigree scrolls and curls surrounds a central circle. Inside the circle, a pentagram is drawn with its loops forming a heart shape. The linework is bold and solid with some areas of shading, and the design is shown in black and grey on a white background.

The gate had been drawn three times before Ruth Okonedo ever lit the forge. Mrs Pargeter wanted her late husband's mark on it, a pentagram bent round so its two lower loops made a heart, and she wanted it set inside a ring of curls like the ironwork on a cemetery gate in Sheffield. Ruth had argued about the scrolls and lost. By half four on a Tuesday in February she had the first bar glowing orange in the tongs, and the dark beyond the workshop window still had no grey in it.

She worked the iron the way her master had taught her, turning it over the horn of the anvil and letting each curl fall where it wanted to go. The hard part was never the long sweeps. It was the tight tails at the ends, where the metal wanted to split and she had to coax it round with a half-inch punch and a patience nobody could hear over the hammer. Her hands knew the rhythm. Her head kept returning to the star itself, the five points that had to close exactly, because a pentagram with a gap in it looked like a broken promise to anyone who knew what they were looking at.
By six the ring was cool enough to weld. She set the star inside it, tacked the joins with a bright clean flash, and stepped back. The heart at the centre caught the first light coming up over the rooftops, and the shadows of the scrolls spread across the concrete floor like a second gate drawn in charcoal. Mrs Pargeter would collect it on Friday. Ruth wiped her hands on her apron and began to sweep up the scale, leaving the star to cool in the growing light.
