Compass rose within a circle of spirals
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a compass rose with eight pointed rays sits at the centre of a large circle. Thin, even outlines form interlocking spirals and scrolls around the ring, extending beyond its edge at the top and bottom. The image is plain black on white with no shading or colour, and the design is centred within the frame.

The chart table in the back room of the Mary Ellen had been shrinking for three days, or so Aunt Bridie said every time someone asked for the pencil. Nobody argued with her about the ship. Nobody argued with her about anything once she had her spectacles pushed up into her grey hair and a pot of tea going cold beside the dividers.

The trouble was the spiral. Every hand that drew the rose on the vellum came out true, eight rays shaped like a heron's bill, but the ring around it kept wandering off to coil itself into scrolls that did not belong to any coast Bridie knew. Her nephew Tomas said the paper was damp. Her husband had said the same, before he drowned off the Skerries, and she had never forgiven the paper for agreeing with him.
On the third night she stopped trying to close the circle. She let the scrolls run out past the edge of the ring, up toward the lamp and down toward the table's worn leg, and she followed the nearest one with the point of the dividers until it looped back on itself and stopped. Where it stopped, the needle took a bearing she had never once been taught.
In the morning the ink was dry, the tea was gone, and the Mary Ellen's bell rang from the harbour wall as though someone had hauled on it from the inside. Bridie wrapped the chart in oilcloth, tucked it under her arm, and walked down to the slip without waiting for Tomas to wake.
