The band at the Assembly Rooms is murdering a foxtrot, and you are leaning on the cloakroom hatch with a pencil behind your ear, waiting for Mr Pryor from the museum to finish his lemonade. He has promised to walk you home if the rain holds off. Vera is out on the floor with a boy from the coastguard, both of them turning like hands on a clock that has lost its nerve. You keep your eyes on the door.

Pryor arrives with chalk on his cuffs and quarry dust in his moustache. The crew at Stonebarrow found a skeleton in the cliff fall last week, long in the jaw, with ribs fanned out like the spokes of a broken umbrella. They have started calling it the Tyrant. He wants a drawing for the catalogue, because, he says, your lines are cleaner than his and nobody believes a man's sketches. You take a dance card from the hatch and draw it on the back: the skull hung open mid-bark, teeth like a row of dropped keys, the spine running down into the dark of the page.
When the band finally stops, Pryor has gone, and the floor is dusted grey where the quarry men tracked in their boots. Vera comes off the floor flushed and asks what you are drawing. You say it is a bone. She tilts her head at the open jaw and says it looks like it is laughing at someone.
You fold the card twice and slide it into your glove, where it stays warm against your palm all the way home through the rain.
