She had sat on the dashboard since Dry Lake Junction, bow straight, glaring at the blacktop as if it had insulted her family. The road ran forty miles without a bend. By noon the heat came off the tarmac in sheets, and the radio gave up on the station out of Tonopah, so I started talking to her. I told her about the flat in Leeds where the radiator knocked all night, and the landlord who wouldn't allow pets, and the neighbour who fed her anyway. She listened the way she listens to everything, which is to say not at all, until I mentioned the neighbour's name and her ears went back.

At the diner in Amargosa the waitress read the bow, then me, then the cat on the seat beside me, and said, Cat lady, is it? I said that was the consensus. She brought a saucer of cream without being asked and set it down with a little bow of her own. The cat drank it, bow slipping sideways over one eye. I reached across and straightened it, and we went back out into the glare, the road unspooling white and endless ahead of us.
