Tiger cub on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a young tiger cub in a seated, turning pose, with its striped body and head rendered in black ink. The shading uses fine lines and tonal build-up to show fur texture and stripes, with the animal set against bare skin. The image is a close, well-lit view of the forearm with a dark background and a red sleeve at the top of the frame.

The cub had been sold to the travelling fair in March for the price of a second-hand van, and by June it had learned to sit on its haunches at the foot of the caravan steps like a dog waiting for its supper. Frank Pell said it came from a zoo in Leeds that had gone bust. Nobody in Hadley Green had seen a tiger closer than the newsreels at the picture house, so on the Thursday before the fair opened, Ruth Abbott carried a tin of condensed milk from her mother's shop and stood at the wire.

The cub ignored the milk. It turned its head sharply toward the church bell across the field, then back to her, as though it had been expecting somebody else. Frank said it did that with everyone. He said it had been taken from its mother at ten days old and had never been told what it was for.
Ruth came every evening after the shop shut. She learned the cub's small habits: it hated the rattle of the generator, it loved the smell of wet sawdust, and it would only eat if she sat with her back to it. In August a storm sent the fair packing a day early, and the field was left with ruts, cold ashes and one cage door swinging on its hinge.
Frank found the cage open at dawn and the tin licked clean on the grass. The cub was never seen in Hadley Green again, though Ruth swore that on still evenings a striped shape sat at the edge of the wheat, turned half round, looking back at the town as if it had only stepped out to see who was calling.
