Taco Bell logo on lower back

Back · Colour · Photo

A close view of the lower back of a person wearing dark jeans and a belt, showing a tattoo of the Taco Bell logo. The bell is shaded in pink, purple and blue with a simple outline, and the words TACO BELL sit beneath it in solid blue block capitals. The tattoo is centred on the lower back against plain pale skin, with a dark belt and denim below.

I counted the cash twice because the till printed one short, and I wanted to be sure it was me being useless and not the machine.

Nobody comes in at this hour except the bakers from Cole's across the road, floury to the elbows, who buy our cold sausage rolls and say nothing. Yusuf came over at four with a tray still warm from his oven and set one in front of me without asking. He said his father used to tell him a bell only rings when someone has to answer it. I told him that was the most Yusuf thing he had ever said.

At twenty to five the sky over the car park went the colour of weak tea. I went out to switch off the sign, which is my job at dawn, and stood under it a while. The letters have been flickering for a fortnight, so the name on it reads more like a rumour than a promise.

I switched it off. The bell went dark, and the ovens across the road glowed orange through Cole's window like a second sunrise. I wrote the cash figure down correctly this time and left the last roll on the counter for whoever comes in next.
