Nobody in Gilling Cross believed Reverend Tobias Amory when he swore the lizard had come to church of its own accord. The bell rope was still swinging when the thing came up the lane, jaws wide enough to swallow the lych gate, and the congregation scattered like hens. Only the new man stayed put, a carpenter called Joss Pellow who had walked up from the coast with a saw on his back and not much else.

The beast stopped at the churchyard wall and lowered its head, and a figure in a faded robe slid down its flank and brushed the dust from his sandals. He wore a halo like a cracked brass washer, and his face was one nobody could look at for long. "You'll want to sharpen that," he said, nodding at the saw. "The beam over the vestry is rotten through." Joss had not mentioned the beam to anyone.

They worked through the afternoon, the stranger handing up nails while the great orange creature dozed in the shade of the yew with its claws folded like a farmer's. By dusk the roof was sound, the stranger was gone, and all that remained was a row of claw marks pressed into the mud and a smell of woodsmoke that hung over the lane for a week.

The village never agreed on what to paint on the ribbon they hung above the lych gate the following spring. The vicar wanted a verse. Joss wanted the plain truth, which was that nobody had ever seen a dinosaur carry a man so willingly, and that his hands had not blistered once since. In the end they wrote what the lizard would have said, and the vicar let it stand.
