Tall black ink giraffe design
Black and grey · Flash
A single giraffe stands side on, with a long thin neck rising to a small head with ossicones and a spotted body. The spots are dense black patches on the torso and fade into finer marks toward the legs, which are drawn as thin, elongated lines. The image is monochrome black ink on a white background with a large empty margin around the figure.

The marquee poles had been up since Tuesday, and Marisol still hadn't found anyone willing to hold the ladder steady. Her brother Teodor stood at the bottom with a clipboard he kept pretending was useful. Above them, a single string of bulbs swung in the wind off the Severn, and she counted the hooks in the oak beam the way her grandmother used to count stitches.

"Leave it," Teodor said. "Nobody looks up at a ceiling during vows."
"Mrs Achebe looks up at everything. She'll tell the whole village if one bulb is crooked." Marisol climbed two more rungs and felt the ladder shiver. The thing she was really fixing was the tall paper giraffe the bride had asked for, the one that had come out of its crate with its neck folded like a broken umbrella. Someone had drawn its spots in ink, and every black patch had bled a little into the card. It looked, in the failing light, like something that had walked out of a sketchbook to see the party.
She wired its head to the beam so its long neck hung straight down past the fairy lights, and stepped back. The giraffe watched the empty dance floor with its small ink eyes, legs thin as pencil strokes, not quite touching the boards.
"It's ridiculous," Teodor said.
"It's the only thing in here that's the right height," she said, and for once he didn't argue.
