TARDIS police box design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a solid white silhouette of a TARDIS police box with a small lantern-style top on a black background. Black vertical slits cut into the panels create the door and window details. The flat, high-contrast design uses only white and black with no shading or gradients.

Now mind, I'm only telling it because the signalman swore to it, and he never swore to anything he hadn't checked twice. Sit down, Albert, the urn's not boiling and neither is the story. It was half past nine on a wet Tuesday, the year the Midland line lost its last steam engine, and a tall box stood on Platform Four where no box had any business to be.

It was painted black, with a pale lantern sitting on its roof like a cap on a boy. Dorothy Pell, the porter, went to shift it with her broom, because that's what porters do with things that aren't on the timetable. The panels had long slits cut down them, the way a ticket office has its little windows, and when she put her eye to one she saw a corridor running on far longer than the platform could ever be.

A man in a coat three sizes too big stepped out and asked her the time. She told him the 9.34 was late. He said, 'Everything's late, Dorothy, that's the trick of it,' and she didn't ask how he knew her name. He pressed a ticket stub into her palm, printed for a train that hadn't left yet, and then the lantern went out and the box went with it, quick as a struck match.

Dorothy kept the stub in her apron pocket for forty years. It's warm even now, if you hold it. Platform Four, no fare, and underneath, in pencil, one word: wait.
