Feather with triangle cut-out design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black feather drawn in ink on plain white paper, with a small white triangle cut out of its middle and notches along the edges of the vanes. The fine wisps at the quill end are drawn in lighter, sketchy strokes. The feather sits upright and centred, with a textured, slightly grainy black fill and no shading or colour.

Maud had counted the rooks off the lime walk three mornings running, and on the fourth she found the feather lying across the sundial's shadow as if someone had set it there to be found. She picked it up by the quill. The black was dense and dry, and when she held it to the window the light came through a small triangle punched clean out of its middle, a gap no bird could make by accident.

Her father had kept bees in this garden and had a saying for anything that didn't fit: put it in the ledger and wait for the next one. So she went to the ledger in the potting shed, a green book of frost dates and seed orders, and turned to the back, where he had pencilled three-cornered notes about the wall. Nothing about feathers. Only a sketch of a triangle beside the words south gate, tell Ruth. Ruth had been dead eleven years.
Maud walked the south gate with the feather in her coat pocket. The wall there was cracked along a line she had never noticed, and in the gap between two bricks someone had wedged a second feather, smaller and grey, its notches cut to match the first. She fitted them together like a lock. The triangles lined up, and through both she could see the far field, the one the council wanted for flats.
She left them where they were. Some messages, she decided, were only meant for the person who knew where to stand.
