Dear Lou, Dad's box has been in the back of the van since Tuesday, and I've spent three evenings with a tin of primer trying to stop the blue bleeding through the gloss where he sanded it too thin. You'll laugh, but the doors still stick the way they did in the lane behind the chapel, and I've decided that's a sign rather than a fault.

Mum wants the box moved to the marquee corner so the photographers don't trip on the step. Tom says it should stand by the gate, where the lamps are. The windows still light up when you run the wire through the back panel, four squares of yellow that Dad cut from a biscuit tin, and at dusk they make the whole field look like somewhere else. I told Tom we'd leave it by the gate and I'd be the one to say allons-y when we walk out to the cars.

The night before, Dad came round with his cough and sat on the step with a flask. He said he'd never once got me to a train on time without that word, and I should keep it for the bit where I'm frightened. I asked him what he thought I'd be frightened of. He said the same thing as him, which is nothing, and then he went quiet for a long while.

So here's the plan. At half four I'll stand on the step with my hand on the door, Tom will open the other side, and we'll say it together. You'll be the only one who knows why. Come early and bring the good camera. Love, Jess.
