Colour tattoo of a TARDIS and a small Dalek against a swirling blue, purple and red sky, placed on the upper back.

TARDIS and Dalek against a swirling sky

Back · Mixed · Photo

A blue police box, shown at an angle, stands on a grey rocky ground in front of a swirling blue, purple and red sky, with a glowing moon-like light behind it. A small Dalek sits to the right, and the word allons-y is written in script in the lower right. The TARDIS is shaded in black and grey with fine detail on its windows and panels, while the background uses softer blended colour.

Log, third watch on the grey shelf. The blue box landed again at a quarter past four, the same as the last time it did not land, and I have stopped pretending the instruments are at fault. Tomasz from the pump house swears the ground hummed under his boots. I told him the ground always hums out here. It is the only thing on Pellow Moon that keeps its promises.

The Dalek came over the ridge at dusk, rolling sideways through the ash-dust as if it had been sent to read our meters. It stopped beside the relay mast and stayed there, turning its eyestalk slowly from the box to me and back again, the way my mother used to watch a kettle she did not trust.

Then the door opened and a woman in a coat far too heavy for the weather stepped out, looked up at the sky with its bruised blue and red bands and the lamp-coloured moon sitting low behind them, and said, 'Right then, allons-y,' to nobody in particular. The Dalek said nothing. I have decided that is the most sensible thing I have seen all year.

I have left the relay lamp burning and the hatch unlatched. If this reaches you, Ansel, tell Mam the moon has a crooked light on it and I am not coming home until somebody sensible comes back for the mast. Tell her also that I did not panic. Much.
