Blue police box with banners on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A blue police box with yellow-paned windows sits at the centre of the design, with a cream banner reading WIBBLY WOBBLY arched over the top and a second banner reading TIMEY WIMEY wrapped across the lower half. The outlines are bold and dark, with soft blue shading on the box and orange and cream tones on the banners. The tattoo is shown in close, straight-on framing on a hairy lower leg against a white cloth.

The box was meant to be the last thing Mr Oswin sold, and he sold it to me for a shilling and a promise to keep the paint fresh. Nobody else wanted it. It stood at the back of the Fenwick Brothers' Travelling Hippodrome, between the elephant trailer and the dead mermaid, with its windows painted yellow and its banners curling off the roof as if someone had hung washing on it and forgotten.

The act was simple on paper. Stan, who had been a sword swallower until his throat gave out, would step inside with a lantern, and I would count to forty, and the door would open on nothing but a small grey room with a bench. People paid for that. They paid more when the bench was gone and the room was a field of wet grass under a sky with two moons. The first winter I believed it was carpentry. The second winter I started to think the box was counting us.
Then the big top tore in Kettering, the wagons went to scrap, and the crowds dwindled to a farmer's dog and a boy with a bag of chips. Stan took the last of the takings and walked into the box on a Tuesday. I did the count. Forty, forty-one, forty-two. When I reached the door it was open, the room behind was warm and smelled of toast, and a voice I didn't know said, "Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey, you'll be early to your own funeral," and shut it again.
I still have the lantern. I still count when the rain comes in sideways over the car park, and I still keep the paint fresh.
