I am writing because the blue box is back on the ninth floor landing, and this time it has its lamp lit on top. You will remember the last time, when the caretaker wanted it taken to the skip. Nobody could say who had carried it up the stairs, because the lift has been out since March and the ramp is chained at night. Mrs Pryce swears it was there before the bin men came, which means nothing, since Mrs Pryce also swears her budgie can finish the crossword.

Anyway, I went and knocked on it, as one does. It made a sound like an old fridge settling, and the door did not open, but a folded paper heart slid out from under it and landed on my slipper. Red paper, very small, with the words "Not yet, Edith" written in biro. I have never told anyone my name is Edith. I had not told anyone I was about to put the kettle on, either.

I have decided it is nobody's business but mine. I am leaving the red bow tie on the mat outside, the one with the little heart at its centre, because whoever it belongs to will want it back before the wedding on Saturday. If it has gone by morning, I shall assume they found their own way home, and I shall be very cross to be left with the tea caddy I had been saving for a special occasion.
