Blue TARDIS tattoo on the lower leg

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A single blue TARDIS police box is tattooed on skin, shown from the front with its panelled door, windows and lantern roof outlined and filled in. The design uses one blue ink with flat solid areas and clean edges, and it sits centrally in the frame against plain skin.

The box came in on the spring tide at Polperro, standing upright on the shingle as if someone had set it down for a minute and wandered off. Nobody agreed what it was. It was painted the blue of a squall coming in, with a lamp on its roof that never lit and a door with no handle.

Mrs Penhallow, who kept the crab stall by the harbour wall, was first to lay her palm flat on the timber. It was warm, she said, like a loaf fresh from the oven. By the third night the children had chalked a wave on the lower panel and a gull on the upper, and the box had taken them the way a sleeper takes a blanket, without comment.

On the fourth morning the door swung inward and nobody came out. Instead there came a sound like a cello being tuned by a man in a hurry, and the smell of hot dust and cut lemons drifted across the quay. Jenna walked up with a mug in each hand and found the inside wider than the outside, a room of brass rails and clocks each showing a different hour, and on the middle rail a ledger open at a page with her own name written in it in her grandmother's hand.

She wrote beneath it, Returned, seaworthy, lamp lit, and shut the door. By morning the box had gone. In its place on the harbour wall, where the chalk gull had been, a small lamp was burning in the dusk, and it has never once gone out.
