The box was standing on the slipway at Scarhaven when we came in off the night tide, its blue paint going grey at the corners and a lamp on its roof still lit though it was half six and the sun had come up over the breakwater. Nobody had seen it arrive. Dougie Pask swore it hadn't been there at four, and Dougie had never lied about anything except his weight.

Skipper Anne Tully walked round it twice with her hands in her oilskin pockets, then rapped on the door with her knuckles as if she were asking for the ice man. It opened inward. Warm air rolled out smelling of hot toast and the ozone you get before a squall, and a man in a striped jumper, his hair like a gull's nest after a gale, leaned out and asked whether we'd got the mackerel in or not.

He wouldn't come out. He stood in the doorway pointing at the boats, the fish boxes stacked on the quay and the gulls squabbling over the bait bins. He told us the bay had been a lagoon once and the tide would stay out for a week if we didn't hurry. Anne asked him what he was. He said, "Just a madman with a box," and shut the door.

When we looked again the box was gone and the slipway was wet and empty, except for a single tin of mackerel sitting neatly on the bollard with a note tucked under it in green ink: thanks for the tea, bring it back by Thursday.
