TARDIS with swirling rings on an arm

Other · Colour · Photo

A blue TARDIS police box is shown at an angle, with an orange light glowing on its roof and orange-lit windows on its front. Purple and teal rings wrap around it in loose, overlapping swirls. The tattoo uses smooth, bold outlines and soft colour blends on a light skin tone, with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The blue box had been wedged between the linen trolley and the sluice door since a little after two, and nobody on the ward would admit to putting it there. You walked round it twice with your clipboard, checking the controlled drugs and the obs chart for bed six, and each time the orange lamp on its roof looked a little brighter, as though it was waiting for you to notice it had gone quiet.

At ten past three the windows lit amber and the corridor filled with the smell of wet grass and hot wiring. Thin rings of violet and mint slid through the wall of the day room, turning slowly, and the clock above the nurses' station stopped mid-tick. Mr Okonedo in bay three sat up and asked whether the 7.15 was running late.

You should have rung switchboard. Instead you opened the door, because the lamp was flickering the way the handover light used to before a crash call, and because some part of you had been hoping all shift for something to lift the weight. Inside was not a sluice room. It was a cramped hall with a coat rack, a kettle and a window onto a moor under a sky the colour of weak tea.

A mug sat on the desk with your name on it, spelt right. The tea was still hot. When you stepped back into the corridor the clock was running again and the ward looked exactly as you had left it, except bay six had stopped its bell and the night sister was staring at you over her screen. "Where did you get that mug?" she asked. You said it had always been there. You were lying, and you both knew it, and the box behind you gave one low, patient hum, as if it had all the time in the world and you were only on a break.
