Cat silhouette tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of a seated cat sits on the outer side of a bare ankle. The cat is rendered as a flat filled shape with a simple tail curl and no interior detail. The black and white photograph shows the ankle resting on denim with two hands holding the trouser cuff nearby.

The last of the Halloran Brothers Travelling Circus pitched its tent on a council car park in Hull in February, and the only people who came were the rain and a man selling hot chestnuts. Our cat, Duchess, did not mind the weather. Every afternoon she sat on the lip of the sawdust ring with her tail curled neatly round her feet, watching the empty benches as though they owed her money.

Dad said cats were bad luck under a big top, which was rich from a man who had lost two fingers to a lioness. Duchess stayed anyway. When the generator failed in March and the wagons went off one by one to a dealer in Doncaster, she was the only thing that never moved from the centre pole. We sold the horses, then the ticket box, then the spangled costumes that smelled of mothballs and mustard.

The bank man arrived in April with a clipboard and a face like damp cardboard. He wanted the tent, the poles and the sign with the painted elephant. He did not want the cat. I carried Duchess out to the lorry myself, past the tightrope nobody had walked since Christmas, and told her she was going somewhere with a proper fireplace.

Sometimes at dusk I still sit on the edge of that empty car park, where the tent used to stand, and wait for a crowd that will never come back. The lights are off and the chestnut man has gone. Somewhere in a Doncaster yard, I like to think, Duchess is curled on a windowsill, tail round her feet, watching the traffic as though it owes her money.
