Tattooed forearm with keys and chain bracelet
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm covered in dense black and grey tattoo work, with the wrist and hand visible at the lower right. Beside it, a set of keys hangs from a metal clip on dark trousers, with a round metal tag reading HELL'S ANGELS M.C. The lighting is natural and the background is softly out of focus.

The bag of keys came across my counter on a wet Tuesday, looped twice through a length of heavy chain that had been left on the lost property hatch like a dropped anchor. The clerk at the hatch said the owner had taken the Leeds coach the night before and would not be needing them for a while. That was all anyone knew, so I took the bag home and tried them one by one, the way my father taught me, with the lamp pulled close and the oil can handy.

Most of them were nothing. A bicycle shed in Cottingham. A caravan door that had not seen a hitch since the nineties. A brass key for a vestry that a vicar had long since replaced. The seventh key turned in the lock of a steel storage unit down by the harbour, number fourteen, and when the roller door rattled up it was full of dance hall posters curling at the corners, a gramophone under a sheet, and a pair of white patent shoes with the toes scuffed grey.
Tucked into one shoe was a folded card in a neat hand: Saturday, the Floral Hall, last waltz at eleven, and a question mark where a name should have gone. I hung the keys back on their chain by the till, the tag facing the wall, and I have not sold a single lock since without glancing at them. Somebody still owes that unit a month's rent, and I have started to think the shoes are waiting for the answer.
