Tea bag and teacup hand tattoos

Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A sepia-toned photograph of two hands clasped together, showing a tea bag with a TEA tag on one hand and a teacup with a curling wisp of steam on the other. The linework is bold and the tea bag is filled with dotted shading, while the teacup has solid shadowing along its body and saucer. The tattoos sit side by side on the backs of the hands, with the soft focus background keeping attention on the designs.

Nobody in the Eastgate Tap orders tea after eleven, so when Ruth Pemberton walked in at ten to midnight with rain on her shoulders and asked Harold for a pot for two, he looked at me as though I might explain it. I couldn't. I was on my third half, pretending to read the racing page, and I watched him drop two bags into a chipped brown pot like a man defusing something.

She sat down opposite me without asking, which was the first strange thing, because we had not spoken since the solicitor's office in March. She pushed a tea caddy across the table. The lid was dented where someone had once used it as a hammer. 'Dad's,' she said. 'Half a pound of Assam, bought the week before he died. I've been carrying it around like a bad debt.'

Harold brought the pot and two cups on saucers rimmed in a scalloped gold that had mostly worn away. Ruth poured. She pushed the first cup towards me, then lifted the second and held it under her chin, letting the steam curl up past her face and vanish into the pub's smoky light. 'You take it first,' she said. 'You always did get the bits that were left over.'

I took it. It was stewed and bitter and far too strong, exactly the way he used to make it for the two of us on Sunday mornings before the rest of the house woke up. Neither of us said anything. We simply sat there, two cups going cold, and watched the steam climb and thin until there was nothing left of it but the smell.
