At the inn below Harrowgate Pass the snow had shut the road for nine days, and the landlady, Maud Pennock, counted her guests the way other folk counted sheep. Two were left: a carter who slept in his coat, and a pair of sisters from the valley, Ada and Liesl, who had come over the pass with one lantern between them and had not said a word since they arrived.

On the tenth night the younger sister knelt at the hearth and drew in the ash with a poker. First a pale curve, then a dark one, each bending round to hold the other's tail. She pressed a ring of petals and dots into the centre of the pale half, like frost on a window, and then her hand stopped, because she could not finish the dark side alone. Maud asked whose drawing it was. "Ours," said Ada. "We were parted at the ford when the ice broke, and each of us kept half of our mother's pattern."

Maud had a bolt of black wool and a tin of soot mixed with lamp oil for marking the flour sacks. Nobody had ever asked her for a pattern before. Through the long night the three of them worked the dark half together, filling its crescent with ring after ring of small stars, lines so fine that the firelight seemed to move across them. By dawn the carter had dug the door clear, and the sisters walked out into the white side by side, the pale one carrying the petals and the dark one carrying the stars.

In spring Maud swept the hearth and found the poker still lying in the grey, the two curves pressed into the stone beneath it. She left them there. The tea cups on the sill were both empty, which was more than she had expected.
