Ribs · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a tea bag with a looped string and a rectangular tag lettered TEA. The tea bag is shaded in orange and brown tones with darker speckling, and the outlines are black. The design sits alone on smooth skin against a plain background, with the tag on the left and the bag on the right.

The rain had come in sideways off the river all morning, and Mrs Ardath's tea stall at the bottom of Saltgate market had taken no money since eleven. She sat on an upturned crate under the tarpaulin with the kettle hissing on its paraffin ring, counting the pennies in her apron pocket and finding them the same number as before.

A boy came splashing between the stalls with his collar up and his hands in fists. He wanted a brew for his mother, who lay in the back room above the chandler's with a fever, and he had two coppers and a promise. Mrs Ardath did not ask for the promise. She took a bag from the tin, a brown paper square folded at the corners, dipped it in the pot three times, and tied its thread to a little card lettered TEA in faded capitals. She handed it over with the string trailing.
"Hang it on the cup," she said. "Lift it out when it's dark enough to be strong. Don't let it sit, or it turns bitter."
The boy ran off with the cup held level in both hands. The next morning he came back with the cup washed and empty, and a drawing of a bag on a string that his sister had made in pencil on the back of a bill. Mrs Ardath kept it under the lid of the tin. The rain went on for a week, and after that people came to the stall with a coin for a bag and a bit of string, because that was how Saltgate had always settled its debts: small, warm, and passed from hand to hand.
