Teacup and purple flowers on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A turquoise teacup and saucer, decorated with a patterned design, sits at the centre of the composition, flanked by two large purple and white flowers and dark green leaves. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with soft shading on the cup's interior and the saucer. Saturated blues, purples and greens dominate against the skin, and the motif is arranged in a compact, symmetrical cluster on the lower leg.

Every spring the wind came up the stairwell of Hollins House looking for somewhere to sit down, and every spring the women on the top floor set out a cup for it. Nobody remembered who started this. Mrs Ashby said it was her grandmother's habit from a village with no roads, and Mr Okafor said it was simply that the lift had broken again and everyone was too tired to argue about it.

The cup was turquoise, with a pattern of little curling vines around the rim, and it lived on the sill above the bin chute. Each morning someone filled it with tea gone lukewarm, set a saucer beneath, and tucked two purple flowers from the council verge into the handle. The wind drank nothing, of course. It only rattled the window and carried the petals down to the car park, where the children picked them up and pressed them into library books.
In the year the tower was due for demolition, the cup went missing. Panic moved up and down the floors like a draught. Mrs Ashby searched the bins, Mr Okafor searched under the radiators, and a boy from the eleventh floor was certain he had seen it on the roof, which was locked.
The wind came in on the ninth day without knocking, and it was quiet. Everyone who had been waiting for it noticed the stillness first. Then they found the cup on the front step of the community hall, full to the brim, with a single leaf laid across the saucer like a note. Nobody ever learned who carried it down. The flats came down that autumn, and the wind, people say, still stops at the empty plot and waits for its tea.
