Stacked teacups with roses and daisies on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bold tattoo of a stack of three teacups and saucers, with a rose on the front cup, surrounded by purple daisies, orange flowers with dark centres, pink roses and green leaves. The black outlines are thick and the shading on the cups is soft, with bright pink, blue, orange and purple ink. The design fills the frame, which is cropped around the upper thigh.

The rose cup was never meant for the bottom of the stack, but by four o'clock on the last Saturday in August Nell had no choice, because the tray had only three cups and every picker in the Pennick orchard wanted tea. She carried the stack down the rows between the Bramleys with both hands, the saucers rattling against each other like loose teeth. Wasps had found the windfalls and were drunk on them. Somebody's transistor was playing dance music from the back of the van, and the grass was so dry it crackled under her plimsolls.

Her foot caught a root near the gate. The bottom saucer, the one with the faded gold rim, split clean across and slid out, and for a second the blue-banded cup wobbled above the rose cup like a bad decision. Nell held her breath. She didn't drop it. She got her thumb under the rim and tipped the whole lot back level, and a sprig of white daisy from the hedge fell out of the top cup into the grass.
Mrs Ogle, who had run the orchard kitchen since before the war, took one look at the cracked saucer and laughed until she had to sit on the tailgate. "That was Harold's mother's," she said, wiping her eyes. "She'd have had you shot. Go on, pour."
They drank under the Bramley with the stack balanced on an upturned crate, too strong and too sweet with condensed milk, and the pickers took turns sipping from the rose cup because it was the nicest. When the pot ran dry Nell lifted the empty stack and turned it in the light. The pink roses on the china looked as if they had been painted that morning. The broken saucer sat underneath, holding everything up.
