Tribal sun tattoo on the top of a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tribal sun design with a central motif and radiating patterns is tattooed on the top of a bare foot. The linework is bold and dark, with the ink appearing black or dark blue-grey and no colour used. The foot fills most of the frame against a warm, dimly lit background, with a second foot visible at the lower left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sun carved over the chapel door at Carn Levah was cut from the same grey slate as the spoil heaps, and nobody in the village could say who had made it. The spirals ran inward from the rim the way water goes down a plughole, and the rays bent at their ends into small hooks. Your grandmother said the hooks caught bad luck before it reached the house. You believed her until the spring the pit flooded and the men were shut below for three days.

Mrs Penhallow sent you up the hill with a pot of chalk and a sheet of brown paper, and told you to take a rubbing before the rain took the carving. Your fingers went numb on the cold grooves. Pressing the paper flat, you saw the rings were not decoration at all. Each one was a gallery, each ray a cross-cut, and the small eye at the centre was the shaft itself, drawn by someone who had walked those workings with a lamp and a bad memory.

You carried the rubbing down to the lamp room that night. Tom Rowse held it to the light, traced the hooks with a blunt finger and went quiet. Two of the ways out matched the places the old men had named, and the third, the one nobody had dug for a hundred years, curled in under the chapel itself.

They broke through at dawn by the third ray. When you climbed back up to the door, the sun on the slate looked smaller than before, just a circle of rock with a few scratches, and you understood it had only ever been pointing the way down.
