Teal scallop shell with peony sleeve

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A teal and green scallop shell sits on the inner forearm, drawn with bold black outlines and fanned ridges that shade from deep green to lighter blue-green. Above it, a red peony and yellow flowers with green leaves continue up the arm, creating a dense, layered sleeve. The shell is shown in close focus against a bare arm, with denim shorts and a blurred background at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide came in over the causeway every evening at the turn of the year, and every evening Old Marta walked out to the lighthouse on Scarrow Rock to light the lamp before the water closed the path. She carried a paraffin can in one hand and a bundle of scallop shells in the other, because her mother had told her the sea wanted paying and shells were the cheapest coin it took.

One November the lamp would not catch. She wiped the glass, trimmed the wick, struck the flint until her knuckles bled, and still the flame sulked blue and died. Out past the rock a boat bobbed with no light to steer by. She heard the fishermen's voices carried thin across the water, calling for the lamp that was not burning.

She knelt on the cold iron floor and turned the shells over in her lap. Each one had a fan of ridges running down from its hinge, green at the edge and paler toward the heart, the way the sea goes when the sun is low. She laid them in a ring around the lamp, pressed the last one into the oil dish, and breathed on it. The oil took the shell's colour and held it, and the flame came up green and steady, and it threw its light out over the water in a fan as wide as the sky.

The boat came home with its lantern lit and its crew shouting. In the morning Marta found the shells gone from the dish, and in their place a single blue-green scale no bigger than a thumbnail, cool to the touch, which she kept in her apron pocket for the rest of her life.
